When Intuition Conflicts With Politeness

SPEAKER_01

Have you ever had that moment where your intuition is screaming at you, but you're sitting there thinking, I don't want to be rude. Yeah. This is the story of the day I stopped worrying about being polite. Welcome back to My Chic Intuition, where we talk about dating, relationships, psychology, and learning to trust that little voice inside of us that somehow always knows before we do. So let's start from the beginning. Before this date even happened, there was already something that didn't sit right with me. He didn't send an Uber. Now, before some of you roll your eyes and say, Girl, you can order your own Uber, trust me, I know I can. This isn't about whether I can, it's about what I personally value. For me, a first date isn't about how much money someone spends, it's about intention. It's about someone thinking, I invited her out. Let me make this as easy

Early Signals That Set The Tone

and comfortable as possible. Psychology talks about something called the primacy effect. Our first impressions tend to shape how we interpret everything that comes after. The beginning of an interaction matters because it sets the tone. For me, this beginning felt a little off. I remember thinking, okay, maybe I'm reading too much into it. Let's see how the rest of the night goes. So I meet him there. On the way over, he texted me two words, red or white. And my romantic brain immediately thought, wait, is he asking me what color flowers I like? I was already imagining a bouquet. I get to the restaurant, walk up to the hostess, and I say, Hi, I'm meeting someone. We should have a reservation. She looks me up and down and checks the computer, checks again. I'm sorry, I don't have anything under that name. At that moment, I'm standing there thinking, Did I come to the wrong place? Then my phone buzzes, come to the bar. So there wasn't a reservation at all. I walk over to the bar, sit down, and that's when I realized he wasn't talking about flowers. He was asking what wine I wanted. Except he ordered me red wine. I hate red wine. Now, none of these things by themselves would have made me leave. No Uber, no reservation, wrong wine. Individually, they're just moments. But here's what I've learned about intuition. It's rarely one giant red flag. It's usually a collection of little moments that when you put them together start telling a story. And mine was just getting started. So now we're sitting at the bar, sipping wine that I already don't like. And I remember thinking, Okay, Carmen, give this a chance. Maybe first impressions aren't everything. We're talking, getting to know each

The Surprise Child And Pattern Recognition

other, and then out of nowhere, he says, Oh yeah, I have a daughter. I kind of paused. Not because having a child is a bad thing, it isn't. But I remember thinking, why am I just finding this out now? See, compatibility isn't about someone being good or bad, it's about honesty and transparency. If something is a major part of your life, I think it's fair to let the other person decide if that's something they're open to before they invest their time. Again, did I get up and leave? No. Because I'm someone who believes one moment doesn't define a person, but I was paying attention. And this is something I think we don't talk about enough. Psychologists call it pattern recognition. Your brain is constantly collecting information even when you don't realize it. That's why intuition can feel so strange. It's not magic, it's your mind noticing little inconsistencies before you've consciously put them together. So I stayed. And then the conversation took a

How He Talks About His Ex

turn. He started talking about his ex, which okay, sometimes people bring up exes, but then he started talking about the mother of his child. He started telling me intimate details about why they weren't together. He talked about how she was insecure about her body, how she didn't want to be intimate. And I remember sitting there thinking, why are we talking about this? We've known each other for what 30 minutes? Here's something I've learned. Pay attention to how someone talks about people who aren't in the room. Because one day, you might not be in the room either. That doesn't mean every breakup has to be friendly. Sometimes people have painful experiences, but accountability sounds very different from blame. One sounds like we both struggled, the other sounds like everything was their fault. And I just kept listening because people will tell you who they are if you stop trying to convince yourself they meant something different. Then he looked at me and goes, Your hair isn't the same color as your pictures. Now let me paint the picture for you. In my photos, my hair was brown. When we met, it was bronze, not purple, not blue, not a completely different person, just lighter. I laughed for a second because I genuinely didn't know what he wanted me to say. I looked at him and thought, is this really what you're choosing to focus on? But it wasn't really about my hair, it was the pattern. Every conversation somehow circled back to criticism, to comparison, to making observations that didn't make me feel more comfortable. They

Criticism Disguised As “Observations”

made me feel like I was being evaluated. And that's when something clicked. I wasn't having fun anymore. I wasn't curious about getting to know him anymore. I was mentally checking out. And here's the psychology behind that. When your nervous system starts shifting from connection into self-protection, your body usually notices before your mind catches up. I wasn't excited, I wasn't relaxed, I wasn't present, I was waiting for the next thing. And I asked myself one question. If this is how I feel on the first date, why am I trying so hard to stay? So I smiled, I asked him where the bathroom was, I stood up, walked away, and never came back. I want to leave you with this. It doesn't. You can be kind without abandoning yourself, you can be respectful without sacrificing your peace. If your intuition

Self-Protection Kicks In And I Leave

keeps whispering, don't wait until it's screaming, listen. Because the right person won't leave you questioning your worth, your standards, or why you're still sitting at the table. And if no one reminded you today, you're allowed to leave. So the next time that little voice tells you something feels off, listen to it because the right people won't require you to betray your own boundaries just to keep the peace. I'm Carmen Ramos, and thank you for listening to MyCake Intuition. Until next time, trust yourself.
